Curiosity Cove: Making learning interactive

Singapore’s largest indoor nature-inspired playscape for children aged 12 and under, Curiosity Cove represents a fundamentally different challenge from traditional projection installations. Here, projection isn’t meant to dazzle with scale or spectacle—it’s designed to enchant, engage, and educate young visitors through interactive visual storytelling.

Moment Factory was the appointed lead experience designer and content producer for Curiosity Cove by the Group.

Mediatechnic Solutions served as the system integrator for Curiosity Cove. Panasonic PT-REQ series 1-Chip DLP laser projectors were deployed across four distinct zones. Each zone offered a different visual experience, tailored to different types of nature discovery and play.

The technical challenge was flexibility. The installation had to accommodate varied play environments where projectors needed to respond to movement, support interactive elements, and maintain visual impact across multiple spaces with differing lighting conditions and geometries. Panasonic’s local engineering support played an important role during the installation, assisting the project team with site specific adjustments and image performance requirements.

Having local technical expertise available helped the team respond efficiently to on-site conditions and maintain consistent visual quality across the different zones. The outcome transformed the playscape and projection became integral to how children explore and interact with nature-themed content.

Exploria: Projection at scale, with complexity

One of Southeast Asia’s largest indoor, nature-themed multimedia attractions, Exploria represents projection complexity at its most demanding. The facility encompasses five uniquely themed worlds, each supported by RFID-enabled digital experiences, with projector specifications ranging from approximately 8,000 to 12,000 lumens.

Mandai Wildlife Group, together with experience designer GSM Project, alongside Electronics & Engineering (E&E), and BOB D&B, translated a bold creative vision into one of Southeast Asia’s largest indoor, nature-themed multimedia attractions.

The technical scope was extraordinary. The installation required 360-degree projection in curved spaces, dome projection to recreate microscopic and otherworldly environments, and multi-surface projection that extended across walls and floors. Projectors were installed at tilted angles to achieve the required coverage.

Black level control had to be precisely tuned to create seamless visual transitions. Lens positioning demanded careful engineering. When no commercially available fisheye lens was compatible with the selected projection setup, Panasonic designed a customised mounting solution to meet the specific installation requirements. A locally fabricated bracket was then developed to position a fisheye lens in front of the Panasonic projector lens, enabling the required dome projection effect.

These details illustrate why flexibility and local problem solving capability are not ancillary services — they’re core to successful immersive projection deployment. Rarely do creative visions and technical realities align perfectly on first specification. The ability to adapt, innovate, and solve problems on-site separates successful installations from troubled ones.

From a visitor perspective, Exploria demonstrates projection’s power to transform spatial experience. Visitors journey through different scales of nature — from prehistoric giants that dwarf the viewer to microscopic worlds accessed via dome projection. They encounter nature-inspired visual effects, including a multi-surface projection experience inspired by how bats use ultrasound to sense their surroundings. Projection helps make the learning visceral and memorable. Abstract concepts — scale, ecosystems, sensory perception — become immersive, emotional experiences.

Bird Paradise: Projection in habitats

At Ocean Network Express Penguin Cove within Bird Paradise, the project team faced a fundamentally different challenge: projectors installed inside an animal habitat operating within a cold temperature environment.

With the wellbeing of the penguins being considered first and foremost, the lighting in the habitat was designed to mimic the day and night cycles of the Sub-Antarctic Falkland Islands. This key welfare enhancement allowed for the penguins’ natural biological cycle to follow the seasons in the southern hemisphere. Projection specifically is used to create the habitat’s own Southern Lights, or Aurora Australis, which are projected in the dome.

Panasonic 1-Chip DLP series projectors were deployed to support the habitat experience, helping recreate an environment closer to where penguins naturally live. But the cold presented a serious technical obstacle. To address this, Panasonic’s local engineering team designed customised enclosures for the installation, ensuring projectors could operate reliably in conditions that would degrade conventional equipment.

The payoff was worth the engineering effort. Projection enhanced the habitat experience, helping visitors connect more deeply with the natural environment being represented.

Rather than viewing penguins through static glass, visitors encounter an environment where digital storytelling and habitat merge — strengthening emotional connection and understanding.

Across the three installations, the respective project teams worked together throughout the design, installation, and commissioning stages.
