KOBA 2016: Struggling for success

South Korea is the fourth largest economy in Asia and its professional AV industry is developed and mature. However in recent years the country has been struggling to maintain the momentum of its growth. The national tragedy of the Sewol ferry from two years ago and the threat of the MERS [Middle East respiratory syndrome] virus this year have meant that the economy has struggled. The latest reports from the Korea Development Institute [KDI] released in May have placed growth at 2.6% for the year, which is down from a forecast of 3.0% six months earlier.

The professional AV industry is also feeling the effects of sluggish growth. The outlook on potential growth varies from distributor to distributor. Talking with multiple players operating in South Korea no general consensus on the state of the market could be ascertained. Many preached a cautious approach as new projects become harder to come by.
