Projection: Brightening up

ISE 2016 saw many projector manufacturers introduce products with brightness in the 5,000 lumens to 10,000 lumens range. Hurrairah bin Sohail tries to ascertain if Asia Pacific is ready to make the switch from sub-5,000 lumens projectors to brighter options.

The humble projector can quite easily make the grand claim of being the most commonly deployed visual technology. Projectors can make this claim on the back of the wide range of brightness, throw distances and image sizes they can deliver. For many small and medium installations in Asia Pacific the conversation about choosing a visual system begins and ends with a simple question - what is the best projector I can afford with my budget?

Dave Duncan, product manager at InFocus, says: “2,000 to 5,000 lumens is the volume category in APAC and worldwide [for projectors]. However, the majority of the volume sales in Asia falls between 2,000 to 4,000 lumens. People are migrating to brighter projectors as they become more cost effective, thus the trend towards more brightness (higher lumens) does continue to increase.”
