6G test signal satellite sent into space

China has launched a 6G satellite, the UESTC Star-Era 12, into orbit to test the technology, entering into orbit alongside 12 other satellites from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre.

As 6G standards have not been agreed, the technology being trialled may not be the final standard implemented by the industry.

The 6G test signal uses high-frequency terahertz waves to achieve data-transmission speeds faster than current 5G technology. The satellite is also carrying technology which could be used for crop disaster monitoring and forest fire prevention.
