LED domes have been identified by both Holovis and Kraftwerk LT as an exciting development for visitor attractions providing a greater degree of creative freedom to AV professionals and bringing a new level of immersion for audiences. Norman Lao, CEO of Leyard APAC, shares his thoughts.
Lao details: “Projection technology’s 3D effects can be limited in terms of brightness and reliability. Alternatively, LED technology delivers maximum brightness, uniformity and clear, crisp images, in addition to a longer life and more opportunity for interactive user experiences. Plus, LED’s flexibility allows users to accommodate almost any shape and size.”
It is important to note LED domes require the right product to be executed in order to deliver on their promise. Lao explains why Leyard is the right choice: “As a pioneer in the narrow pixel pitch LED market, Leyard continues to set
the standard with ground-breaking advancements for next-level visual technology integrations. We offer a wide variety of LED products because we know that customers use LED for an enormous array of applications. LED domes, in
particular, are challenging because of the preciseness and LED architectural engineering involved.
These are not just empty words as Leyard products have a demonstrable track record when it comes to domes constructed from LEDs. Lao says: “We have the technology and know-how to bring customers’ unique visions to life. This is evidenced by our installation at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). The state-of-the-art facility features a massive 5m diameter LED globe weighing 3.5 tons that is suspended from the ceiling and composed of 1,040 individual panels of 12.7 million individual LED lights.”
Lao also believes that the Leyard’s research and development activities will be taking the ‘wow’ factor of LED domes to new heights: “LED displays not only provide the flexibility users need to meet their exact needs, but more importantly, support interactive and 3D features that allow them to create one-of-a-kind experiences and drive impact. In this case, LED domes are an attractive solution, but do require a special level of expertise to achieve the exact design and technical
configuration the customer is looking for. Leyard is a leader in durable, vibrant touch screen display solutions, providing fast and intuitive interfaces that can simplify the user experience. This is further enhanced by optical tracking and motion capture solutions from NaturalPoint, a company we acquired in 2017 to bolster our interactive capabilities for customers.”
In the near future, Lao believes Leyard will be able to deliver products that will
make LED domes widespread in the visitor attraction sector. He concludes: “We continue to see the price of LED displays decrease and become more affordable as the technology advances. However, budget for content development should be a key consideration for companies in the industry today. This will help set them apart from others in the space, as well as create the ultimate ‘wow’ factor for their visitor attractions.”
