Pushing the envelope with LED

Leyard’s position as an industry leader in the realm of LED technology cannot be doubted. Norman Lao, vice president for Leyard APAC, says: “We have the biggest market share in the industry and the Leyard brand is identifiable by everyone from consultants to integrators and content producers. The success has been achieved because we aren’t just a manufacturer, we are also inventors. We own our own products and our technology. Today, I believe we have more than 200 patents.”

Leyard’s focus on research and development is driving the company’s LED offerings for the market forward and it isn’t research just for the sake of research. Lao says: “We unveiled a 0.6mm 8K micro LED in Las Vegas at CES 2020. A lot of people questioned whether we need 0.7mm or 0.6mm pixel pitch. My response to that is when the content was 2K we did not need such fine pixel pitch. But now, as we are at 4K and move towards 8K, the need for these fine pixel pitch products is becoming greater. The Tokyo Olympics are going to be broadcast in 8K this year. How would you show 8K content with a 2.5mm tile? The screen would be over 600-in. So, Leyard’s technology development is always in line with the needs of the content and the demands of the market.”

Leyard’s push for finer pixel pitch products ties in with the hospitality sector’s demand for high quality display solutions. Lao details: “The hospitality sector and interior designers in general want higher resolution displays that can deliver on quality and bring a wow-factor. Leyard’s LED display solutions check all of these boxes. With Leyard solutions viewers get higher quality, sharper images and more natural colours.”

With Leyard LED displays already occupying a premium spot in the market, the manufacturer is focusing on even further improving their functionality. Lao explains: “Of course there can be no compromise in terms of quality when it comes to spaces such as hotel ballrooms. But we should also focus on functionality. Video conferencing is an area where I think Leyard’s LED solutions can offer something new. With the advent of 5G we will be able to improve data transmission for higher resolution content. I think we can explore what this, coupled with finer pixel pitch LEDs, can do for conferencing.”

Lao believes that the development of 5G can bring about further improvements: “We can look at having complete solutions for videoconferencing with wireless connection and large size LED displays. The size of the display that LED solutions bring to the table means that features such as facial recognition and user detection can actually be feasible. These kinds of features can take conferencing applications to the next level whether it is for hospitality, corporate or any other sector.”

While Leyard continues to work on developing solutions for tomorrow, its core focus remains its users. Lao says: “Leyard’s focus is on bringing together hardware and software and delivering it to our customers in an easy-to-use bundle. There are a lot of components to an LED display system such as content players, control systems and remote monitoring, and Leyard aims to bring all of these elements together to provide the perfect solution.”
