Barcelona police to toughen up security for ISE 2025

Barcelona’s police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, has confirmed that it will strengthen security both on and off site at ISE 2025, announcing safety tips for visitors to this year’s show.

Inavate, alongside the Integrated Systems Europe team, met with police commissioner Alicia Moriana, as well as superintendent Carles Hernandez, head of Mossos d’Esquadra’s counter-terror team and superintendent Miquel Hueso, head of special units, to discuss crime in the city of Barcelona, as well as new and existing measures for security both in and around the show.

Bolstered security

This year’s ISE show will see a strengthened police presence both at and around the show. The Mossos d’Esquadra aims to increase the perception of security at the venue, as well as at and around hotels and in the metro system. These toughened security measures include day and night patrols by uniformed officers at the show and in the city, working with the venue’s private security and other police and intelligence branches. Plain-clothes operatives will also provide an extra layer of security and deterrence, aiming to intercept criminals at the show, in the metro system, and in the vicinity of hotels.

During show days, Mossos d’Esquadra will establish a dedicated police station at the show’s south access to assist in case of incidents which may take place either at the show or within the city of Barcelona. Attendees can report offences or seek assistance from officers at this station, or visit any other police station in the city.

ISE also has its own dedicated security plan, providing a comprehensive plan of action for emergencies, security incidents and emergencies, as well as alarm chains and action plans for a wide range of incidents and safety precautions. This includes everything from counter-terror response, demonstration responses, as well as additional risks posed by the presence of governmental VIPs. Mossos d’Esquadra’s counter-terror chief, Carles Hernandez, emphasised that the threat and risk posed by dissident groups or terror groups to be minimal, with no indications that ISE is being targeted by social movements, terror groups, or extremist factions. Mossos d’Esquadra will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates where necessary.

The Fira also has its own permanent security point, which is staffed 24 hours a day by security personnel with the support of security guards and, where necessary, public order officers and plain-clothes officers. In the event of an emergency or incident, attendees can call the emergency number, 112, for immediate assistance.

Staying safe

Mossos d’Esquadra announced additional security tips to enhance visitor safety both at the show and around the city.

Remove your badge – It is recommended to remove your ISE badge when leaving the show to avoid drawing attention to yourself. Additionally, it is recommended that attendees do not wear clothing with badges or logos related to your organisation.

Keep your valuables out of sight – As theft is the most common crime in Barcelona, it is recommended that luxury watches or other expensive valuables such as mobile phones, purses, and jewellery, should not be displayed openly. When carrying valuables at the show or around the city, visitors are advised to be mindful of their surroundings, and to be cautious around unknown persons who may use a distraction or sleight of hand to steal your property. Valuables should also be carried in front pockets instead of back pockets where possible, and handbags should be worn in a crossbody style. It is recommended to only take the essentials when out in the city.

Stay alert – It is important to be on the lookout for pickpockets, especially in crowded areas, public transport, and in public areas. Extra caution should be exercised in hotels, restaurants, public transport areas, and in public places. Some criminals may attempt to use diversion or distraction techniques, so be wary of people with potential distraction items such as clothing hanging form their arm, a newspaper folded in half in their hand, or a map.

Crime at a glance

Speaking with Inavate, the police commissioner confirmed a total of 12 crimes that were reported at the show, all of which were thefts. This marks a decrease in reported criminal activity compared to ISE 2023, where 17 crimes were reported to police. Commissioner Moriana highlighted that, according to recorded crime statistics between 2023-2024, 190,000 crimes were recorded in the Barcelona region, with a reduction in crime of almost 5%. Barcelona reported a lower crime rate than other popular European cities over the same period, with a lower rate than London (938,020 over 2023/2024). Statistics presented by the police showed that 84% of crimes in the city were committed against property, with 9% of crimes committed against people. Larceny (theft of personal property) was reported as the most prominent crime in the city.

It's important to remember that most crimes in the city take place in public areas, such as streets and parks, with shops and hospitality venues ranking as the second most likely area for crime, followed by the metro system. With a population of 1,702,814, Barcelona experiences an average of 112 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants.
