Christie Inspire series and Captiva 1DLP laser projectors are delivering visual storytelling at the newly inaugurated Museum of Word in Kolkata, the first museum in India dedicated to celebrating the country’s linguistic diversity and literary heritage.
Located within the historic Belvedere House of Kolkata’s National Library, the museum occupies approximately 2,282 sq m across nine distinct galleries. Designed by DRONAH (Development and Research Organisation for Nature, Arts and Heritage), it uses interactive exhibits and advanced AV technologies to engage visitors in the evolution of language, communication and culture, tracing their journey from oral traditions and ancient manuscripts to modern digital communication.
To bring this vision to life, a total of 16 Christie laser projectors have been deployed across multiple galleries and experiential zones. The installation comprises 11 Captiva DWU500S ultra short throw projectors and five Inspire series 1DLP laser projectors, including the DWU760-iS and DWU960ST-iS models equipped with a 0.65-0.75:1 fixed short throw zoom lens.
MSS World implemented the audiovisual technologies used across the museum, while Pavilions and Interiors (P&I) served as the main contractor responsible for the execution and delivery of the museum’s exhibits.
Pratik Wadhwa, CEO of MSS World, said: “Creating engaging multimedia exhibits throughout the museum required projection solutions that could adapt to a variety of spaces and applications. The combination of Christie Captiva DWU500S and Inspire Series projectors gave us the flexibility to support diverse exhibit requirements while maintaining the integrity of the gallery spaces. By matching different projector models to the specific needs of each exhibit, we were able to create engaging visual displays throughout the museum without compromising design or visitor flow.”
The projection solutions address the museum’s diverse display needs, from installations requiring large images in confined spaces to displays demanding bright, high-quality visuals. Complementing the projection systems are 22 Christie 4K UHD LCD panels that power a range of hands-on exhibits and digital experiences, creating fascinating journeys through the story of India’s languages.
Rishubh Nayar, pro AV sales director for India, Christie, commented: “The Museum of Word is a remarkable example of how technology can be used to preserve, celebrate, and share India’s rich linguistic heritage with future generations. More than simply presenting information, the museum invites visitors to experience language through immersive and collaborative environments that bring stories, ideas, and cultures to life. We’re delighted that our Inspire series and Captiva projectors are helping create these memorable visitor experiences, demonstrating how advanced visual technologies can support museums and cultural institutions in educating, engaging, and inspiring audiences.”
