Despite only launching in February this year, Intel is bringing an end to its Vaunt smart glasses project. The manufacturer announced it is shutting down its New Devices Group, which is responsible for wearables.
Vaunt, which was called Superlight internally at Intel, looks to be one of the most high profile victims of the group's closure.
Vaunt differed from other glasses tech like Google Glass because it featured a low-power projector which beamed a red, monochrome 400x150 pixel image into the lower right corner of the user's visual field.
In February this year Bloomberg reported Intel was trying to sell a majority stake in the business, which it valued at roughly $350 million.
A statement sent to various online press reads as follows; “Intel is continuously working on new technologies and experiences. Not all of these develop into a product we choose to take to market."
“The Superlight project is a great example where Intel developed truly differentiated, consumer augmented reality glasses. We are going to take a disciplined approach as we keep inventing and exploring new technologies, which will sometimes require tough choices when market dynamics don’t support further investment.”
