X3D Studio — Southeast Asia’s largest virtual production studio — celebrated its launch with an exclusive grand opening on Wednesday, 19 June 2024 at 25 Pasir Panjang Road in Singapore.
Spanning 40,000 square feet, the studio is also the first virtual production studio in the region to receive accreditation from ARRI – a renowned studio equipment manufacturer.
The opening of the studio signals Singapore’s appetite for venturing into the realm of virtual production, which co-founder Karen Seah believes will boost the production of local films and movies. According to Seah, X3D Studio provides the infrastructure and capabilities for filmmakers to leverage, especially in a country with land and space constraints.
The event also saw the screening of two short sci-fi film teasers that were produced and shot in the studio itself, as well as a live demonstration of the studio’s capabilities in action.
At the heart of X3D Studio is the large LED wall, powered by INFiLED’s LED screen. The LED wall measures 18m x 6m and comprises 432 DBI.9 Mark-2 panels with CBSF (Color & Brightness Shift Free) technology. It is powered by Brompton Tessera SX40 processors.
Ivan Tymoshenko, head of virtual production operations at X3D Studio, commented: “The INFiLED LED screen has been performing amazing so far, with remarkable colour accuracy and refresh rates. Personally, this is one of the best screens I have worked with. Typically, LED screens achieve around 8 to 10 F-stops of dynamic range. With INFiLED panels, we are able to achieve 12 F-stops of dynamic range.”
To measure the performance of the INFiLED LED screen, Tymoshenko detailed the process: “There are a couple of standards we use to make sure the LED wall works in its optimum. Firstly, we measure the dynamic range as well as the color accuracy of the visuals. So far, we’ve had extremely good coverage of the Rec. 2020 colour space. Besides this, we also conduct tests with a genlock system to ensure that we can achieve high frame rates of 100 frames per second.”
Tymoshenko continued: “With virtual production, there is a lot of flexibility in filming. The set and content can be changed in real-time, and actors will be able to see their surroundings without having to imagine it, so the entire experience becomes more immersive for them. Plus, with virtual production, there would not be limitations involving weather conditions or spatial constraints. It works out for filmmakers and all content creators involved as they can fully concentrate on being as creative as they can be.”
Alex Yong, product specialist at INFiLED, concluded: "We are very honoured to be recognised for our quality by the film industry. It is a proud moment for us to be among the first in the Southeast Asia region to offer this kind of LED solution for the film industry. We look forward to collaborating with others and providing more LED solutions in Singapore."
